CONCEPT

Parkhaus 2 and 3 were kept as low as possible in order to preserve the views across the airport landscape to the existing Terminal 1 and new Terminal 2. These two parking structures use the same system components. The structure is composed of (4) 65 m wide units separated by a 10 m wide light court. Highly detailed steel structures clad the basic rough steel construction. They include the stainless steel mesh facade cladding, the vine walls in the light courts, and railings of stainless steel cables. The elevator/stair towers are also steel structures with cantilevering platforms of stainless steel planks in front of the point fixed glazing of the elevator towers. The glass elevator cabs ride in open air shafts and are designed to function in extreme weather conditions.

The Parkhaus 2 was the first building component in the expansion of the Cologne/Bonn Airport and lies on trapezoidal site bounded by the existing elevated roadway, new Terminal 2, future train station and new road network. 5,800 parking spaces are located on 6 levels, which are linked by two cylindrical ramp structures. The structure has vehicular access at its east and west ends and the main exit feeds directly into the existing terminal road network. The upper level has an additional entrance/exit directly to the elevated departures roadway in front of Terminal 2 and is intended for short-term parking. The lowest level is dedicated to rental car return and pick-up.

Airport visitors have direct access to the new Terminal 2 via the levels 2, 4 and 6. The intervening levels are linked by the two open air elevator/stair cores to these connecting levels, insuring easy visitor orientation and quick access to the Terminal building.

The 8 story Parkhaus 3 has 4,500 long-term parking spaces and is constructed of the same systems components as were used in Parkhaus 2.
