CONCEPT

In its basic form, the Messeturm is an obelisk. It is, however, a modification of the historical form. In its geometry, it is a composition of square and circle - topped with a stepped pyramid. The contrasting forms are treated in different materials.

Stone, the natural material, touches the ground; and glass, the artificial material, touches the sky. This interest in contrast is evident in many aspects of the tower: the sharp corner and the curve, stone and glass, horizontal gridded and vertical composition, figure and abstraction. Through this, an attempt is made to mediate between the old and the new.

The Messeturm in its figurative form resembles the American Skyscrapers of the 20's that were full of format and ornamental expression and symbolic and stylistic content. In its materials and technology, the building is a conscious continuation of the modern Bauhaus tradition.

The Messeturm shows that there need not to be a split between the technology and artistic generators and that it is possible to combine both.
